Cultural Grants Awarded to 41 Local Artists and Organizations
.
In January 2012, the Pittsfield Cultural Council (PCC) awarded grants to 41 artists and local arts organizations.
“This year, the Council received many stellar applications and we are thrilled to distribute our funds to such a talented collection of individuals and groups,” said Marsha Rose McDermott, president of the PCC.
$17, 471 has been awarded to 41 grantees that will bring culture and the arts to the city of Pittsfield. In the coming year, audiences will enjoy concerts, theater, dance, educational programs, and art exhibitions—each program and event funded in part by the cultural council grants.
The grants are part of the Council’s annual grants program, which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency that supports public programs and educational activities in the arts, interpretive sciences and humanities.
The Local Cultural Council Program is the largest grassroots community grant program of its kind in the country. There are over 2,200 volunteers on 329 cultural councils, serving every city and town in the state. The LCC Program is the most extensive system of its kind in the nation to support arts, humanities and interpretive sciences.
The Pittsfield Cultural Council will seek grant applications again in the fall. For more information, e-mail pittsfieldculture@yahoo.com or visit www.mass-culture.org/Pittsfield.

Funding Priorities
EXPLANATION OF PRIORITIES
Projects must represent a solid contribution to the vitality of Pittsfield’s cultural life. While in some cases projects originating outside of Pittsfield may be funded, priority is given to those involving Pittsfield residents.
Priority will be given to:
- projects planned by Pittsfield artists or organizations;
- projects planned by individual artists, rather than established organizations;
- new applications and/or new projects (as opposed to individuals/organizations which have received funding in recent cycles for the same, or similar projects);
- projects for which the budget reflects equal expense and revenue lines and for which a thorough and complete budget has been presented.
- projects that reach diverse audiences, especially people who do not usually benefit from arts offerings.
LIMITS OF FUNDING
- The maximum grant amount is $2,000.
- Council funds are not intended as the sole source of funding on projects of a continuing nature.
- Applicants will not be funded for more than three consecutive years.
- Projects must be financially feasible with evidence of any other committed funds presented with the application and a reasonable date of completion included in the application.
The Cultural Council does NOT fund:
- administrative costs for salaried staff, support staff or volunteers;
- projects that do not pay artists at a professional, or union, scale;
- fund-raising projects;
- materials such as paint, paper, etc.; food or beverages;
- capital expenditures (i.e. permanent equipment), unless a case can be made for community use after project’s completion and project has a 2 to 1 match of funds (i.e. $100 from other sources to $50 from Pittsfield Cultural Council).
Please note: Cultural Council funds are not intended to substitute, replace or relieve existing responsibility for municipal or other funding of programs in the arts and humanities.
