The purpose of the Marion Cultural Council is to promote excellence, access, education, and diversity in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences (STEM) in order to improve the quality of life for area residents.

FY24 Local Priorities

Marion’s number one priority is to promote access to MCC funds to projects that will directly improve the quality of life for those living in and around the town of Marion.

Using data from our latest community input survey (July 2022) the council will prioritize the following when making decisions using the top responses from Marion citizens.

1) The grant will directly benefit a significant amount of Marion’s residence.
2) Community-wide gatherings/festivals
3) Performing arts
4) Visual arts
5) Educational Programs and field trips for local schools
6) Nature and environmental education projects / STEM-related projects
7) Projects celebrating local history and cultural diversity
8) Public Art (such as sculptures, etc.)
9) Art education
10) Education/lectures
We will also be considering funding for projects that prioritize specific segments of the community:
1) Families
2) Children
3) Seniors, particularly reduced-rate events
4) Adults
5) Persons with disabilities
6) Minorities
7) Communities of immigrants

Marion Cultural Council limits grants to a maximum of $750.00*
Marion Cultural Council does not have the ability to provide locations for grantees or host events; all grantees must have a specific space planned for their event.**
Marion Cultural Council does not accept emails when returning receipts or any forms for reimbursement. All reimbursement documentation must be sent to the council as a hard copy. ***

– Have a secured date and a Marion venue
– Have demonstrable support from a Marion sponsor (i.e. if you are requesting a school event the principal has given you a letter of recommendation, if you are planning an event at the library they have agreed to sponsor you, etc..)
– Engage Marion-based artists whenever possible
– Impact a significant or large part of the Marion community
– Provide new ideas, creativity and interactive programs for a diverse community (not a repeat program)
– Require zero to low admission/participation costs
– Advertise on Marion based media and ensure the Marion Cultural Council is recognized in the advertisements when events are announced/promoted.

Marion Cultural Council does not have the ability to provide locations for grantees. All grantees should provide the location of their event as well as an approximate date. If working with a school or community organization the council requires that the applicant provide a statement of support from said school/organization.

Time/Venue Required: Applicants must specify an arranged venue for their activity and a specific date or on-going timeline. A letter of support showing a space in secured is highly recommended. Grant activity must take place between July 1, 2023 and December 31, 2024.

– Level of Support: The Council does not fully fund any project. To demonstrate that your project is not dependent solely on Marion Cultural Council funding; You must specify other sources of financial support in the budget section of the application. All requests for full funding may be denied.
– Local Priority: Preference is given to applicants who live or work in Marion, and who offer programs and presentations that specifically benefit a wide range of audiences in the Marion community.
– Handicap Accessibility: Activities must take place in a handicap accessible facility.
– Qualifications: Applicants must demonstrate a record of engagement in the type of activity for which funds are requested.
– Program Eligibility: Programs in music, dance, visual arts, poetry, literature, drama, the humanities, and scientific interpretation for all age groups will be considered. Capital expenditures will be considered. Applications for programs that are normally funded by the town budget will not be considered.
– Repeat Applicants: An applicant who is funded 3 successive years will have lower priority in the 4th year.

“This year we ask applicants to consider a possible virtual or “back up” option/and or dates for their events if possible. The inability to do this will not hinder your consideration however may be helpful for your project.”
