West Newbury Cultural Council

The West Newbury Cultural Council provides yearly funding for local events surrounding the Arts, Humanities and Interpretive Sciences. Our Council reviews applications for a variety of events including concerts, art exhibits, musical performances, historical series, literary festivals, library and school programs, theatrical events, class offerings for senior citizens and other populations as well as other art-related programs. We appreciate emerging as well as established individuals and organizations. We strive to grant funding for a diverse group of community and surrounding programs. Current Council Members include Jocelyne Cosentino, Catherine DeWitt, Amy Friend, Heather Karp, Jess Knezek, Jen Pepper, Alyson Tedeschi and Linda Young. We are always looking for new members to join the Council and add a fresh perspective to Grant Season.

The West Newbury Cultural Council will prioritize fully funding West Newbury-based programs and applicants.
Applicants should secure a location and receive host approval prior to applying for funds.
If we have a high number of applicants, we may not be able to fund groups for consecutive years.
Field trip funding is limited to tickets or presenter fees only.

Council Guidelines
Effective April 2007

I. Program purpose and review criteria The purpose of the West Newbury Cultural Council is to promote and maintain the vitality and local cultural resources and to ensure these resources are shared with the West Newbury community. The Council is committed to funding a diverse cross-section of activities. We support a broad variety of art forms, the ongoing work of individual artists, environmental education projects, collaborative proposals that bring together artists and other types of organizations, local groups and projects that serve specific populations–youth, elders, low-income, disabled.

Applications are evaluated in terms of several criteria: Artistic or creative merit; project design; qualifications, dedication and track record of the individuals and organizations involved; physical accessibility of any facilities being used; and community benefit/involvement. Proposals from schools and libraries must not request support for activities that should be or used to be part of the municipal budget (i.e. teacher salaries, classroom supplies, school-sponsored clubs and organizations, library books/videos etc.). Enrichment projects utilizing outside professionals are allowed.

II. Eligibility

Applicants can be : a) arts, humanities or interpretive science organizations; b) individuals including artists, performers, science educators, historians or other humanists, parents, community members, etc.; c)community organizations including, but not limited to, schools, social service organizations, civic groups, neighborhood centers, youth, senior and family associations, etc. Incorporated organizations must be nonprofit; unincorporated associations must have a nonprofit purpose. Individual applicants are required to be residents for at least one year; organizations must be organized and operating in the state for a least a year.

III. Timeline

Application Deadline—–October 17

Notification of disapproved applications– January 1st

Notification of approval—on or before January 30

Final reports and payment requests due—-April 10 (following year of approval)
